The Eagle and Child A Timeless Oxford Experience

PUB IS CLOSED :-{

The pub, which shut its doors on March 20, 2020, due to the first coronavirus lockdown, has not reopened since. There were ambitious plans to relaunch it as a pub with boutique hotel rooms, but these plans did not come to fruition, and it is now being marketed as a standalone pub.

Eagle and Child has been sold to a technology institute.

St John’s College have struck a deal with the Ellison Institute of Technology

tech company has bought the pub in St Giles from owners St John’s College and says renowned architect Norman Foster will renovate it.

the tech company says it wants the Eagle and Child to be a place for both scholars from the new campus and the wider university to come together to work on technology issues.

Great news

The refurbishment will include the addition of a new restaurant. I cannot wait for this pub to re open its doors. if you would like more information on this topic please visit the oxford mail website  should you want more ideas on things to do in oxford in one day please look at the rest of my posts.

A Legacy Reborn: The Historic Eagle and Child Pub

Nestled in the heart of Oxford, The Eagle and Child stands as a testament to the city’s vibrant history and academic excellence. Known affectionately as “The Bird and the Baby,” this pub has been a cornerstone of Oxford’s social life since its opening in 1684. As we step through the threshold, we are walking in the footsteps of literary giants; it’s here that the legendary Inklings, including J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, once gathered to discuss their now-celebrated works.

The Inklings' Sanctuary

During the tumultuous 1930s, a group of Oxford’s brightest minds formed an unofficial club within these walls. With no formal structure, this gathering of professors, thinkers, and writers would meet weekly, fostering the creation of worlds that continue to enchant readers to this day.

A Modern Chapter

In recent developments, The Ellison Institute of Technology has acquired The Eagle and Child, ensuring the continuation of its storied legacy. Plans to refurbish and reopen the pub are underway, promising to blend the rich tapestry of its past with the innovation of the future.
